Aligarh in One Day

Aligarh is one of the 13 metro cities in the state of UP. It is situated at a distance of 136 km from Delhi, 87 km from Agra and 287 from Jaipur, the third city of the golden triangle of the tourist circuit. It is a big manufacturing hub for brass fittings, locks, metal sculptors and a variety of handmade articles in brass and other metals.

It is one of the fastest upcoming cities of Uttar Pradesh. It is famous as ‘Taala Nagri’- the city of locks. This fame has been earned by Aligarh. It began producing iron locks in 19th century and it is still considered to be the home of some of the best lock manufacturers in India. It is famous for iron, aluminium and bronze products also.

Aligarh is famous for its lifestyle, culture, museums, and several important educational and religious institutions. It is also considered a great commercial centre. This attracts a large number of tourists here every year. When they come to visit Aligarh they find the place to be a shopper’s delight. Those who wish to go around Aligarh need a well thought-out itinerary. The same is given below.

9 am: It will do good to start the day with prayer. The first place to go to is the Durgah of Baba Barchi Bahadur. This Durgah is one of the most secular places of Aligarh. It is a 600 hundred years old place famous for fulfilling the wishes of the devotees. They come to the Durgah and tie a wish thread. When the wish is fulfilled the devotees visit the Durgah again and untie the thread.

It is situated at a distance of 1.4 km from the centre of Aligarh near Ghantaghar circle. The circle is very reachable by a rickshaw, an auto or a car within 15 min. The rickshaw will charge around INR 40 from the centre of the town. The autos are not metered and carry share passengers. One can hire for single person also. The auto will charge somewhere around 80 to 100 INR.

10.00 am: From the Ghantaghar circle it will be easy to go and see the Aligarh fort which is one of the famous monuments of Aligarh. This is a wonderful example of the mix of the Indian and French style of architecture. The original plan of the fort has been changed in later years by successive rulers whenever they felt the need for reinforcements. The changes have left the fort stronger than before and as the result of this addition and changes the Aligarh Fort is considered one of the strongest forts of India.

The fort is located at a distance of 4 km from Ghantaghar circle via NH 509. It is reachable within 10 min by cars, taxis, autos, cycle rickshaws and locally available buses that ply around the city.

11.30: Sir Syed Academy Museum is located in the campus of AMU at a distance of 3.4 km and reachable in 10 min via Quila road. It is housed in the former bungalow of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the virtual founder of the university. The museum is a treasure house of art work, personal belongings of Sir S. A. Khan and a pictorial history of the university in chronological order.

Tourists can take cars, taxis, buses, rickshaw, and tempos to reach the museum.

12.45 noon: The next place will be to go to the Dor Fort. The fortress is close to the Centre point Market. An auto will charge not more than 50 to 70 INR to move to the Kotwali area where the ruins of the fort can be seen. The fortress was built by Raja Budhasen Dor. This was the place of durbar where the raja used to keep his court and dispense justice to his people. There was a tall minaret inside the court built by the Rajput ruler Mangalsen for his widowed daughter who used to pass her time watching Yamuna from its upper Mandap. The place is reachable by tempos, rickshaws and autos at a distance of 5.5 km from the museum via NH 509. It is reachable within 12 min.

1.45 pm: It is time to head towards the Centre Point shopping area at a distance of just 2.9 km from the Dor Fort. There are several malls and eateries in this area. The great value mall is situated on samad road. There are a lot of shops in the area to begin some purchases and have a few bargains. Once the shopping is complete, you can go to some of the good eateries of the area. It is famous for some good restaurants.

2.45 pm: This is the time to take your lunch. The Centre Point area has plenty of both high end and moderate kind of restaurants. Here you will find many restaurants that provide good vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Aligarh is famous for its chicken ‘biryani’ and meat. In fact a lot of roadside vendors can provide very tasty non-vegetarian food. The vegetarians also do not need to worry because there are several good places in the Centre Point area that provide it. ‘Thaali’ system is popular in Aligarh. One can have a ‘Thaali’ at a fixed amount of money and have the best possible vegetarian food for one person.

3.45 pm: After taking a relaxed lunch the next destination in this day tour would be the Shekha Lake.
This lake is the main water reserve for Aligarh and supplies the needs of the city. It is a well visited tourist spot of Aligarh because of the wildlife diversity of this area. The main tourist attraction of the area is the migratory birds that visit here in winter and make it one of the best places for the ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts.

The lake is situated at a distance of 17 km from the Centre Point shopping centre via NH 91 by G.T.Road/Kasganj Road and reachable within 20 min taking buses, tempos, cars and guided tourist buses.

5.30 pm: Next destination should be the Teerthdaham Mangalayatan situated at a distance of 23.3 km. it is easily reachable by cars, taxis, tempos, rickshaws and buses within 25 min via NH 509/SH 39. Mangalayatan is one of its own kinds of a religious place in Aligarh. It is a Jain institution and pilgrim site which is not only devoted to traditional worship but also to social service and research. It is spread over a huge area near NH 93. The Mangalayatan is a centre of education also. It has four temple complexes spread over more than 16 hectares.

8.00pm: On return journey from Mangalayatan via NH 509, the place to visit will be the Marris road civil lines to cap the day. This is the area to find a good restaurant and have delicious dinner. Milk Bar Delight, Fazle-e Kareem, Palm Tree Hotel and Restaurant, Mahajan S Muskan restaurant are some good places to find a sumptuous meal. Finish the dinner and move to your hotel to have a good night sleep.
